Chelsea suffers another defeat against Brentford
By Peter Ochieng
English Premier League (EPL) 'minnows' Brentford produced perhaps their best performance this season to defeat heavyweights Chelsea 2-0 in Saturday's early kick off.
The first half ended 0-0 before Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo's second half goals sank Chelsea at their Stamford Bridge home turf.
Chelsea were the better side throughout the contest, but where Mauricio Pochettino's side proved wasteful, Thomas Frank's Brentford proved clinical to register only their third win this season.
Pinnock, speaking to TNT Sports after the game said he is delighted to have helped the Bees, as Brentford is nicknamed, to register a massive win against Chelsea.
He said they struggled in the first half, only to gain momentum as the game progressed after the half time break.
"I think first half we struggled to get out of it, we knew we would be under the cosh for long periods so we worked at it all week. The boys stuck to their task and we really felt we could get at them with set pieces and on the counter."
"I was buzzing. The long throws we work on a lot. My job is to hang around the back post and stay onside and attack anything that gets over the last man. I got there. As soon as he crossed it I could see the height. It was just about timing and making sure I got good contact. I'm delighted," stated the striker.
"We know they're a top quality side, we've seen their performances raise in the last few weeks. There was a big defensive focus on stifling them, staying in the game, just trying to frustrate them. We knew the longer the game went on the more we could grow into it."
The win is the third on the trot away to Chelsea, since earning premier league status in 2021.
The Bees won at Stamford Bridge during the 2021-2022 season, 2022-2023 and now 2023-2024.
Brentford are 10th on the log with 13 points, one point ahead of 11th placed Chelsea.
The biggest match of the weekend is on tomorrow, when Manchester United play host to Manchester City in the first Manchester Derby of the season.
