Community Health Volunteers to receive training on mental health care

Homa Bay county government is set on training 2950 Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) on the new model of community strategy to sharpen their skills as the primary health care providers.

Governor Gladys Wanga said her administration has partnered with the national government through the ministry of health to equip them with extra skills in a programme that is geared towards strengthening community health services. 

She noted that the national government had shown an interest in the CHVs due to their critical role in the community and saw it best to offer them the training.

The governor who was speaking at Marindi sub-county hospital during a meeting with the CHVs said the training programme will equip them with adequate skills and knowledge on antenatal care services and hospital child delivery.

She noted the training will ensure an improvement in maternal health care services which will consequently reduce maternal and infant mortality in the county.

Wanga further stated that Homa-bay still has poor health indicators and in order to address them, it is important to strengthen the entire health system including the working conditions of the CHVs who are the primary health care providers.

"The role which the CHVs play in the provision of primary health care and management of health indicators cannot be overemphasised. I have taken my time to listen to them and I assure you of my total commitment to make them efficient and better equipped for the task," she affirmed.

The governor noted that her administration is keen on ensuring high quality health care services are affordable to every citizen, adding that this is the driving force behind its regular engagement with the CHVs at the village level.
