Court halts reopening of Endarasha Academy boarding facility

The reopening of Hillside Endarasha Academy boarding facility in Nyeri County has been temporarily blocked.
The High Court in Nyeri stopped the reopening of the boarding facility, citing serious concerns over the safety of pupils, as the third term draws to a close.
In his ruling, Justice Dennis Kizito said he had the interest of pupils at heart while making the decision.
He expressed concern over the potential risks to the pupils who may have to go back to the boarding facility.
“I do not find it necessary to bar the reopening of the entire school, noting that schools are closing this month. However, I am satisfied there is a threat to the safety and health of the minors,” he stated.
The ruling was issued as a result of a petition filed by the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and Elimu Bora Working Group on October 7, 2024.
The petitiones told the court that the school was unprepared to reopen its boarding facilities, after reportedly failing to implement necessary safety measures.
Respondents were directed to file comprehensive health and safety reports and assessments of the dormitories’ structural integrity by October 16.
Endarasha Academy attracted national headlines when a fire incident at the school on September 05, 2024 resulted in the death of 21 learners.
The incident occurred at night when the learners were asleep.
Renovations were conducted at the school after the tragedy.
Wooden beds were replaced by iron ones in one of the major changes.
A funeral service for the young departed souls was held on September 06.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka was among political leaders who attended the event.
