CS Kuria 'in trouble' for posting supermarket promotions, claiming food prices have dropped

By Peter Ochieng

Trade and Industrialization Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria on Thursday found himself on the wrong side of Kenyans, after posting prices of supermarket promotions, with a claim that charges for basic commodities were going down.

“It's coming Dooooown, Down Down Down!” the CS captioned a photo of a supermarket promotion poster.

The CS soon realized that Kenyans were aware of his game plan. Here are some of the reactions by Kenyans on X, formerly twitter.

Kachwanya: Really, promotions...these guys have these deals like weekly nothing to do with the prices coming down.

Muhammad Onyango: Surely Moses! Carrefour has weekly promotions on selected items to push stock. How do you equate this to the prices of goods coming down and GOK working for Wanjiku?

Chief Disruptor: Carrefour advertises every week deals they’ve agreed with brands. It’s one of their requirements for merchants to push for deals. Every week there’s a deal.

B.M. W: Now we have cabinet secretaries going to supermarkets to take photos of promotional items and sharing them on X to show that they are working. Oh God, it shall not go well with these people. I hate it here. @WilliamsRuto, what is this?

Dr. Evans Richard: You are a disgrace. How can you go to a supermarket take photos of their deals and post here as a reduction in cost of living. Stop lying to Kenyans.

Kamau Njoroge: You should be very embarrassed that majority of what’s on those shelves is imported. Have so shame and make it possible to get local industries up and running.

Kaizen04: As a trade CS, know the difference between offer and the actual price of products. An offer can be placed on a number of products for a short period of time mostly to offset the stocks under short expiry, the product is new in the market etc. Its a short-term relief to consumers.

Vincent: These are deals. They only last for some time in the supermarket, then the normal resumes. It's to attract customers.

The opposition stated anti-government demos over the high cost of living early this year.

President William Ruto insisted protests cannot reduce the cost of living, adding that it will come down gradually.
