IG Koome directed to investigate 'fake lawyer'
By Peter Ochieng
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has been ordered to investigate Brian Mwenda Njagi, an alleged fake lawyer.
Renson Ingonga, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) wants the investigation conducted thoroughly, and within a short duration, before he acts.
Ingonga in as statement on Saturday said upon completion of the investigations, he will review the file before possibly prosecuting the suspect.
"Upon receipt of the inquiry file, the ODPP shall undertake an independent review of the evidence, guided by the provisions of the Constitution, the relevant statutory provisions and the ODPP decision to charge guidelines, 2019 and give appropriate directions," he said.
He added, "We shall give an update on this matter as and when the resultant inquiry file is received by the ODDP."
Njagi was unmasked by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Rapid Action Team (RAP) Nairobi branch, for allegedly practising as an advocate of the High court without qualifications and certificate.
In addition, the DPP directed IG Koome to investigate all other people masquerading as lawyers in the country.
Before 'he met his waterloo' Njagi had reportedly successfully argued 26 cases at the Magistrate court, High court and the Court of Appeal, on behalf of his clients.
He has already gotten support from various people, among them Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU-K) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, and former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi, alias Sonko.
Sonko has pledged to support Mwenda's studies at the Kenya School of Law (KSL).
