Everton midfielder Dele Alli has opened up about his mental health problems and revealed that he was sexually abused when he was a child.
In an emotional interview with Gary Neville on the Overlap, and which was discredited by the Atletic magazine, the 27-year-old said that he was sexually abused at the age of six and sold drugs during his tragic childhood.
He has admitted for the first time that he went to rehab in an effort to counter his dependence on sleeping pills.
He said:" I mean, I think there were a few scenarios that could give you a brief insight.”
"So, at 6, I was abused by a friend of my mother, who was very at home. My mother was an alcoholic, and that happened at six o'clock. I was sent to Africa to study discipline, then I was returned. 7 years, I started smoking, 8 I started selling drugs.”
"Twelve, I was raised - and since then, it was like-I was carried away by an amazing family as I said, I couldn't ask the best people to do for me what they did for me.”
"If God created people, it is they. They were wonderful, and they helped me a lot, and that was another thing, you know - when I started living with them, it was difficult for me to tell my life, because I felt in me, it was easier for them to drive me away again”
“I tried to be the best child I could be for them. I stayed with them from 12 years, and then began to play the first squad, professionally, at the age of 16. Everything started from there.”
Dele moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Everton in 2022 but struggled to find a better standard at the Merseyside club. He later moved to Besiktas on loan, where he also failed to find consistency in his playing.
Dele now wants to help others who are struggling with similar problems.
