Swearing in

Deputy Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho assumed office on Thursday morning, a day after being appointed by President William Ruto.
Kanja was sworn in at the Supreme Court of Kenya, in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome.
The CJ urged police to foster a good relationship with members of the public.
She said members of the police service should endeavour to work within frameworks of the law.
“This is necessary given the reality that policing becomes effective when the public and communities cooperate with police in the fight against crime and maintenance of social order,” said Koome.
The CJ said she is confident Kanja will carryout his duties proffessionally.
"I have no doubt in my mind that the meritocratic process of your appointment and your wide experience as a professional police officer makes you well qualified for the task ahead of you. I, therefore, have confidence that you will perform your duties in accordance with the law and fairness given that our Constitution venerates the cardinal value and principle of justice."
She reminded him never to depart from the law.
“The oath which you have taken today should guide you in your day-to-day work. According to the oath, you must never depart from the law. In addition, the oath equally requires you to serve this country to the best of your abilities and bearing in mind the enormous responsibility placed upon you."
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin were among those who witnessed Kanja's swearing in.
He takes over from Edward Mbugua who retired from the service last month.
