Kenyan musical artist,Jackson Ngechu popularly known by his stage name Prezzo risks a jail term according to the Kenyan constitution after he was spotted dorning an official government emblem on a video he posted.
The artist took to his social media to share his sentiments on the upcoming elections and issued a piece of advice to Kenyans to choose leaders on a basis of merit and capabilities, not in terms of being in a political party. He shared the video via his socials under the caption“Sisi ndio sisi hao wengine ni mafisi ndani ya Ofisi...Prezzo msema ukweli ao.Change you can believe in”
It's during the video that netizens pinpoint him dorning a government emblem on his t-shirt.
The move is considered a break of the law according to the constitution. The Kenyan Constitution strictly limits the use of Emblem to certain grounds and people. If anyone is found or seen in one they risk a jail term of close to 5 years and a possible fine of 5000 shillings.
“The National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, Cap. 99 Laws of Kenya was enacted in 1963 to among others, prevent the improper use of the National Flag and of certain emblems, names, words and likenesses for professional and commercial purposes and to prohibit the display of certain flags.”
The section specifically states that......no person shall except with the written permission of a minister(b) use any specified emblem, specified name, specified name or specified likeness or any colourable imitation thereof, in the title of any patent, or in any trademark or design or manufacture or import any article or goods bearing any specified emblem.....”
The section further cautions anyone who does the same. Part of the section reads “Any person who contravenes the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine not exceeding five thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both fine and such imprisonment.”
The artists joined other celebrities who launched their political aspirations for the forthcoming elections.
