DJ Brownskin was on Monday charged with aiding suicide of his wife, contrary to section 225 (b) of the penal code.
The DJ, whose really name is Michael Macharia Njiri was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, in Nairobi, where he faced a charge of aiding suicide of his wife, Sharon Njeri Mwangi on 29th July, 2022 at their house in Nairobi.
The popular DJ was also charged with neglect to prevent a felony, ‘where he failed to use all reasonable cause and effort to prevent the suicide.’
He faced another charge of destroying a mobile phone that had a video recording of his wife committing suicide. The prosecution had earmarked the mobile device for use as evidence.
Brownskin denied the charges before Milimani chief magistrate Lukas Onyina. He will be detained until 15 June, 2023, when the court will give a determination on his application to be released on bail.
DJ Brownskin was arrested on 1st June, 2023. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), said his wife died shortly after taking poison.
“In a heart-wrenching video tape released by a popular blogger on April 1, 9 months after Njeri’s remains had been buried, her last moments were filmed by the DJ as she emptied a poisonous substance into a cup and ingested without hesitation,” said the DCI in a statement on 4th July, 2023.
“She then slumped on a couch and called her two children to inform them of her impending death. The mother of two collapsed and died shortly thereafter. She was buried at her parents’ home in Koimbe Weithaga village, Murang’a County, on August 6 last year.”
Detectives established that after recording the ordeal, the suspect sent the video to his girlfriend living abroad, before the girlfriend went public with the information through the blogger.
