President Ruto files returns at KRA headquarters

By Peter Ochieng

President William Samoei Ruto has filed his returns.

The Head of State filed his returns on Friday, publicly at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Times Towers headquarters, in a move aimed at convincing Kenyans that the only way to economic prosperity is paying tax.

He arrived at the tax man's doorstep few minutes past 8.00am in the company of his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, with KRA staff who served him indicating that he was tax compliant.

Ruto encouraged Kenyans to file their returns, before the 30th, 2023 deadline.

He said his move was not a mere publicity stunt.

"I have always endeavoured to be tax compliant and to remit my taxes in full. This exercise is not a mere dramatization or a publicity stunt, it is an exercise I cherish," said Ruto.

"KRA must acquire a new image, so that when people come to Times Tower, they don't come here trembling, but come happy to be served."

He has previously stated that tax payment is the only way out of the country's reliance on loans to fund development initiatives.
