DP Kindiki chairs first cabinet committee meeting

By Peter Ochieng

Deputy President (DP) Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday chaired his first cabinet committee meeting, since being sworn in on Friday, November 01, 2024.

The committee on governance, social sector and public administration meeting was held at the DP’s official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

Several Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) attended the meeting, among them John Mbadi (National Treasury and Economic Planning), Julius Migos Ogamba (Education), Eric Muriithi Mugaa (Water, Irrigation and Sanitation), Beatrice Askul Moe (East African Community, ASALs and Regional Development), Kipchumba Murkomen (Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports) and Rebecca Miano (Tourism and Wildlife).

Others were Rosalinda Soipan Tuya (Defence), Dr. Alfred Mutua (Labour and Social Protection), Dr. Debra Barasa (Health), Dorcas Oduor (Attorney General), and Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau.

Such meetings were previously chaired by Kindiki’s predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua who was removed from office by impeachment.

The role of chairing full cabinet meetings is however a preserve of the President, in this case William Ruto. Cabinet meetings are held once in a week, at State House, Nairobi.

Meanwhile, President Ruto met Members of Parliament (MPs) from Nairobi County on Tuesday, alongside members of the steering committee of the Nairobi Rivers basin regeneration, at State House, Nairobi, to discuss the process of rehabilitating Nairobi River.

Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja also attended the meeting. President Ruto said the rehabilitation exercise is progressing well, with light starting to be seen at the end of the tunnel.

“The regeneration of the Nairobi Rivers Basin is progressing well. With nearly 10,000 young people working in the program every fortnight, garbage has been cleared in 75 km of the 94 km-stretch of the Nairobi, Ngong and Mathare rivers,” he said.

“Additionally, 69 km of the basin has been unclogged and 56 km levelled. To conserve the rivers' basin, 272,000 seedlings have been planted and 268 tree nurseries established.”
