There was drama at Milimani law courts on Tuesday, April 12, as a man who’d masqueraded as a lawyer and made a presentation before a court was arrested during an ongoing case.
The man identified as Edwin Motari appeared before Chief Magistrate Wendy Micheni claiming to represent fraud suspect Chadian Abdoulaye Tamba Kouro.
Everything was okay until Motari made a contradicting statement regarding the medical documents of his alleged client.
Kouro who was out on bond was arrested after failing to appear in court as requested. In his defence, he claimed that he was unwell and unable to make it to court.
The court had requested for medical documents to confirm that the accused was unwell, but his team did not provide any.
According to Motari, his client who is accused of acquiring Ksh76 million from former Garsen MP Danson Mungatana by false pretense did not have any medical documents since he used herbal medication.

This contradicted a past submission where Kouro had told the court that his medical documents were in the custody of his lawyer.
Confused by Motari’s submission, the magistrate questioned his legal qualifications and sought to know whether he had a practicing certificate issued by the registrar of the High Court.
Responding to the magistrate, Motari said he did not have a certificate, adding that he was only holding brief for another lawyer.
Following Motari’s admission that he did not have a practicing certificate, the magistrate ordered for his immediate arrest.
"I order the court orderlies to arrest this man and he be charged with impersonation contrary to the law," the chief magistrate was quoted by the Star.
Motari is expected to be presented and charged in court today Wednesday April 13, 2022.
Kouro; a traditional healer from Central Africa is accusing of defrauding Mungatana Ksh76 million. The accused reportedly committed the offence in April 2013.
According to the prosecution, the accused allegedly defrauded their client claiming to be an investor who could invest his money in the oil business.
