Eldoret court orders murder suspects to undergo mental assessment

Three people, among them a woman linked to the brutal murder of a 20-year-old man have been directed by an Eldoret court to undergo mental assessment.
Eldoret Senior Resident Magistrate Ms. Rosemary Onkoba ordered that Juliet Ayieta, Paul Osinde and Gregory Mukhori, both boda boda riders be taken for mental tests at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, MTRH to confirm their fitness to stand trial.
“The accused should be escorted by the police officers to MTRH in Eldoret for mental assessment to confirm whether they are fit to stand trial,” ordered the Senior Resident Magistrate in her ruling.
She further directed that the first accused be remanded at Eldoret GK women's prison while the other two accused persons be taken to the Eldoret GK men's prison respectively.
The trio is accused of killing Ahmed Mohamud Ismael on June 2, 2023 at West Indies estate in Turbo sub-county, Uasin Gishu County.They are said to have subjected the deceased to mob justice in connection with the theft of a mobile phone belonging to a college student.
The deceased was attacked with stones and other crude weapons by a mob led by the three accused persons after the college student raised an alarm to the effect that the deceased had stolen her phone.
According to the police report, the angry mob pursued and caught up with the young man where they allegedly stoned him to death at the gate of a hostel the victim stayed in.
The accused persons have been in custody at the Eldoret central police station since they were arrested over the murder of the teenager, The case will come up for mention on July 26.
