Uasin Gishu County government will host the first biennial Devolution Conference from August 15 to 19, 2023.

The area governor Jonathan Bii said that all the counties will be seeking to showcase their transformative agenda and propel them to be leaders of successful devolved units.

Mr Bii said the conference will help transform the socio-economic status of the county, especially Eldoret town which is eyeing city status.

“We are dedicated to making the conference a resounding success and as hosts, we have undertaken several programmes to prepare for the event,” he said.

“We have been actively engaging with hospitality sectors to ensure they are fully prepared to host an estimated 10,000 visitors as a consortium. Our goal is to provide a welcoming experience highlighting the renowned Uasin Gishu hospitality,” the governor said.

On matters of infrastructure upgrades, he said that they have made significant progress as all priority roads including access roads to the main venue and the Eldoret Sports Club were currently being enhanced.

Bii said his team is diligently working on improving street lighting, installing cabros and beautifying the town, creating a vibrant and attractive environment.

On Water provision, the governor said through their partnership with Eldoret water and sanitation company (ELDOWAS) and other service providers are in process of ensuring reliable water supply for the guests throughout their stay.

“Access to clean water is a vital aspect of our preparation,” Bii added.

Bii further said that the security planning and coordination committee has conducted a series of meetings with county security officials to ensure that safety and security of all conference participants was guaranteed.

“Your well-being is our most priority and we are committed to providing a secure environment throughout the conference,” Bii noted.

“We are in the process of growing trees across the county where we will grow the ceremonial tree and establish a gazebo at the arboretum. This will be a move championed to protect the environment, by growing trees, we are actively contributing to preserving our natural resources,’’ he said.

“The arboretum serves as a symbol of our commitment to a greener and more sustainable future. We are soon embarking on beautification of our town and streets. These achievements are indications to the hard work and dedication of my administration, working tirelessly to ensure the success of this historic event,” Bii noted.

Bii also informed that they have established a joint committee between the council of governors and the county facilitating effective co-ordination and collaboration.

He called upon the national government to expedite the pending project on the completion of Kipchoge Keino stadium that is currently at around 60-70% completion.

On his part, Ahmed Abdulahi, the Wajir county governor noted that it is an honour for Uasin Gishu to be the host of the conference which brings together everyone from all sectors and levels of government.

“Devolution is a key aspect of Kenyans as anything happening in national government happens in county government and our country will succeed if devolved units provide the basic needs to its citizens”, said Abdulahi.

“I urge Kenyans who intend to participate from August 15 to 19 to go to the Council of Governor’s website and register at CoG.go.ke and register “added Abdulahi.

Nominated Senator Prof Margaret Kamar noted that the business community and farmers should register in large numbers, as there will be a slot for exhibitions where locals showcase their products to promote their heritage and benefit from the conference.
