At least 168 bright but needy students in Makueni County are benefiting from the Elimu scholarships project supported by the National government in collaboration with Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, World Bank and Equity bank.
The form one students who include 92 girls and 76 boys were provided full four-year school fees, transport and upkeep money to sustain them during their studies in various secondary schools across the county.
Speaking to KNA today in his Wote office, County Director of Education, James Gachungi said that the government is committed to ensuring needy students were able to access quality education.
"As a Ministry of Education, we are committed in ensuring all the students get quality education even those who are from vulnerable backgrounds”, said Gachungi
Gachungi added that they have approved 917 schools in both the public and private sector for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) where 834 are public schools while 83 are private schools.
He noted that public schools in the county have received the capitation funds from the national government.
“So far, the school heads have been sensitised on how to utilise the funds, as well as ensuring that there is proper sanitation and food storage in our schools,” he added.
