President William Ruto has officially opened the Bura Irrigation and settlement Scheme rehabilitation projects headworks gate at Bura, Tana River County on Saturday. 

This comes as the Irrigation Scheme is undergoing expansion to boost food production and increase Irrigation land. 

The President Said that the expansion will increase expansion will increase land under Irrigation from 12,000 acres to 25,000 acres whilst improve production by 950,000 bags of rice and 500,000 bags of maize annually 

"Irrigation is central to our national food security ambitions. The rehabilitation and expansion of the Bura Irrigation Scheme will increase land under irrigation from 12,000 acres to 25,000 acres and improve production by 950,000 bags of rice and 500,000 bags of maize a year. " Ruto said in a Facebook statement. 

He added that 120,000 jobs will be created boosting the economy by sh 5 Billion Annually. 

" This expansion will also generate more than 120,000 jobs, and boost our economy by Sh5 Billion annually. "President Ruto said. 

President Ruto also inspected the construction of a 26-Kilometre main canal which he said is currently 53 per cent done and the new gravity-fed system will generate a saving of Sh120 Million a year

The president was in company of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Governor Godhana Dhadho amongst other leaders drawn from the coastal region.

President Ruto is currently in a coastal regional development tour
