Expressway closed over demos

A section of the Expressway in Nairobi has been closed.

The Highway has been closed due to the ongoing demonstrations called by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leaders, led by Raila Odinga.

Moja Expressway, the company which runs the Nairobi Expressway confirmed shut down of a section of the major highway.

"We regret to inform you that a section of the Nairobi Expressway toll services have been temporarily halted at Mlolongo, Syokimau and SGR Toll Stations due to the ongoing demonstrations. Efforts are underway to restore normalcy to the road," said the company in a statement.

"For your safety, we urge all motorists plying the Westlands-Mlolongo route to exit from JKIA and Mlolongo-Westlands bound motorists may safely join the road from JKIA Toll Station."

In videos widely shared online, rioters could be seen vandalising part of the barriers on the road.

In Kisumu, one person is nursing a leg injury after being shot at Kondele, following confrontation between protesters and police.

In Emali, Makueni County, demonstrators set a blaze a police vehicle, after one of them was reportedly shot dead by security officers.
