Finance Bill: Azimio invites Kenyans for consultations
By Peter Ochieng
Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leaders are in the coming days expected to give their supporters a way foward, after MPs passed the controversial Finance Bill, 2023.
Members of Parliament passed the bill on Wednesday night, despite opposition from Azimio.
Addressing members of the press on Wednesday, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua said they are inviting Kenyans to Kamkunji grounds next week, where a way forward will be issued.
"We have decided to invite Kenyans to a consultation at the Kamukunji grounds next Tuesday, 27th of June at 10 AM where the next course of action will be decided. Whenever we've come together as a people, we have always found a solution even to our worse problems," said Karua.
The veteran politician said during the meeting, people's voices will prevail.
"This time, there will be no different. We believe that in the end, it is the people's voices that will prevail. The long time we suffered longer than we should, is when we've allowed dictators to rule longer than they should."
MPs passed the bill which proposes a ray of issues aimed at raising funds to support the 2023/2024 budget.
The sailing through of the 1.5 per cent housing levy means starting 1st July, 2023, employees will contribute a fraction of their salaries to the housing fund.
Employers will match it up with a 1.5 per cent contribution. Karua says the bill is anti-people, and hence must be opposed at all costs.
"People can never be helpless in their own country, in a democracy like ours," she added.
It is still not clear which measures Azimio leaders will put in place, against the bill.
