Former soccer legend wants talent nurtured

Sony Sugar legend Alfred Ojwang has urged leaders from Busia County to consider funding local teams to nurture talents to realize the income resulting from transfer of players.
Ojwang who was a lethal striker during his time at Sony FC has taken the initiative to launch sporting activities in Butula sub county as a way of giving back to the society.
Speaking during the back to school tournament played at Sikoma primary school where at least eight teams from largely Marachi community took part in the event, he stressed on the need to offer the youth a platform to exploit their potentials in soccer.
“Sports is the leading revenue generator for many countries in Africa. It has employed thousands across the world who are earning handsomely,” noted Ojwang.
The tournament targeted school going players to instill discipline and resilience in their daily endeavor both at school and society.
Neela FC were crowned champions after hammering Simuli FC 2-1 in an entertaining football match that attracted hundreds of sports fans.
Simuli FC captain Timothy Sisa a form 3 student at Simuli secondary while conceding defeat urged the ministry of sports to increase funding to teams from grassroots tap talents at its peak.
Ojwang’s sentiments were echoed by Gabriel Barasa captain Neela FC who encouraged students to incorporate sporting in academics to excel
