Four suspected gangs who have been terrorizing Nakuru residents have been detained.
The suspects who were arrested on Friday at a rented house in Pangani Estate were found with nine mobile phones and two knives.
According to Nakuru East sub-county police commander Elena Kabukuru, the suspects are being held at Bondeni Police station where they will be arraignment in court on Monday.
Though several phones were recovered by authorities, the police commander said that when the police raided the gang’s rented house in Pangani, the four suspects damaged some phones in an attempt to hide evidence.
“We managed to salvage a few phones which will be used as evidence against the suspects. We appeal to people who have in the recent past been mugged by the criminals in Pangani, Bondeni, Kivumbini, Kanu Street and surrounding areas to report at Bondeni Police station to identify their phones,” said Ms Kabukuru.
She called upon the residents whose phones were stolen to come forward and file complaints against the suspects.
Ms. Kabukuru further said that those who had been arrested have been released due to lack of evidence.
“In the past, many gang suspects that we have arrested have been set free by the court because of lack of evidence and complainants like those who have been mugged opt not to give evidence in court once they recover their stolen mobile phones,” the police boss added.
She said that in order to stop such incidences, police patrols will be increased in the affected areas especially at night where thieves take advantage by attacking the residents and stealing from them.
The affected areas include; Kivumbini, Bondeni, Manyani, Lake View, and Pangani.
Investigations are also underway to identify the owner of the rented house.
