Gachagua: I will face my accusers in Parliament
By Peter Ochieng
Deputy President (DP) Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua has confirmed to the nation that he will face his accusers head on, on the floor of the National Assembly.
The embattled DP is facing an impeachment motion which is active on the floor of the National Assembly.
He will appear before the August House on Tuesday, with the National Assembly granting him two hours, from 5pm to 7pm, so as to defend himself against 11 accusations that are subject of the motion.
"I will avail myself so that voters and my supporters can here from me," the DP said, while addressing members of the press at his Karen home, in Nairobi on Monday evening.
The second in command said the allegations raised by Kibwezi West Member of Parliament (MP) Eckomas Mwengi Mutuse in his impeachment motion tabled on Tuesday last week, are nothing short of a political scheme aimed at haunting him out of office.
He said the motion is an act of deceit, conmanship and politics of betrayal.
The DP denied allegations that he corruptly acquired property worth over Sh5 billion since coming into office in 2022 against his Sh24 million, supposedly gained from his salary for the two years he has been in office.
The listed properties include the Vipingo Beach Resort in Kilifi County, which Gachagua said, belong to his late brother, former Nyeri governor James Nderitu Gachagua.
Concerning the companies listed in the impeachment motion, the second in command stated that before becoming a politician or assuming the office of DP, he was a businessman and that he no longer trades with the said companies.
He faulted the National Assembly of carrying out a shoddy public participation exercise on his proposed removal from office.
"My lawyers will challenge the manner in which the exercise was conducted," said the DP.
The second in command added that as things stand, he is a 'spent cartridge in the Kenya Kwanza administration,' that must be done away with, after being 'used to fight Uhuru Kenyatta (former President) and getting President William Ruto' to power.
Hours before his explosive interview full of emotions, Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua called for the impeachment of both President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
This, Karua said, was indicated by members of public during the public participation exercise on the motion for the impeachment of Gachagua.
