Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei now says Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba should be held responsible for the deadly stampede at the Kericho Green stadium which claimed four lives on the morning of the Mashujaa day celebrations.
“The supervising ministry of Sports CS Ababu must held responsible for this unfortunate incident. This is (a) clear pointer of substandard work done by the ministry at the stadium. The incident embarrassed all of us. My apologies to the entire country,” the Senator said.
A police statement confirmed that four people were killed with 13 more hospitalized at the morning of the 60th Mashujaa celebrations with more sustaining injuries.
The four who died at Kericho Referral Hospital were among several people, including a minor and four unidentified women , who were rushed to the facility following a stampede at Gate C of the stadium.
A police statement further revealed that incident that happened around 6AM was caused by a woman who was selling tea outside the stadium who accidentally spilled hot tea into the fire near Gate C along the public road causing members of the public to panic in fear of a tear gas being fired at them.
"My heart goes out to the families and friends who lost their loved ones after stampede at kericho stadium yesterday." Cherargei said.
President Ruto sent his condolences to the affected families last night.
