In an emotional message, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called for more support towards the differently abled children in Kenya as a devastating fire razed a section of the Jomo Kenyatta Center for Children with Physical Disabilities.

This incident, which happened on June 28, 2024, has left many questions hanging in the air concerning the future well-being of more than 2,000 children who have passed through the center since 1974.

Gachagua, at a fundraising drive at Moi Stadium, Embu, on Saturday, September 28, 2024, identified himself with the families whose children had been affected and challenged the community to support these vulnerable children.

"The differently abled children need our support, care and love," he added as he called upon Kenyans to join hands and support the people in need.

The event, which was organized by the Kenya Red Cross, was also attended by senior leaders such as Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, Senator Joe Nyutu, and Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Njeri Maina among others.

For many years, the Jomo Kenyatta Center has been the point of hope for several families with children who require services for various physical disabilities besides rehabilitation programs.

In the wake of the recent fire, which burnt parts of the center, Gachagua pointed to the dire need for immediate funds to revive the center back to useful service delivery.

Many, in attendance, a call to action by the Deputy President included, supported the recovery process with a financial contribution.

Kenya Red Cross, an organization known for humanitarian works, launched an appeal to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the centre so that the children could receive the care and support required.

According to experts, about 2.3 million Kenyan children live with disabilities and have to lead very challenging lives burdened with stigma, and many lack proper services.

Organisations such as the Red Cross or even the Jomo Kenyatta Centre play an important role in their development and advocating for rights.

It is here that Gachagua's remarks come as the government increasingly seems to focus on inclusive policies that seek to better the lives of people with disabilities.

He galvanizes community support to nurture a caring society in service of the value and potential all children deserve, regardless of their abilities.

As the recoveries at the Jomo Kenyatta Center get underway, the leaders and community members will be instrumental in providing a prosperous future for differently abled Kenyan children.
