Gangsters kill Policeman providing security to KCSE, injure colleague

  A policeman detailed to provide security during examinations in Siaya was today hacked to death as his colleague suffered serious injuries when they were waylaid by unknown gangsters as they escorted an examination official to Mahero Secondary school in Uranga division.

The 7.50 am incident that took place a few metres to Mahero school gate saw the two officers lose their guns to the gangsters who disappeared into the tickets to unknown place.

According to sources, the two policemen and an examination official had been dropped at the tarmac along the Siaya – Nyadorera road due to poor road condition and were walking to the school when two panga wielding thugs emerged from the thickets and without word, started hacking the officers.

The villagers said that the surprised policemen were not given a second to respond despite having guns. In the ensuing melee, the examination official took off and sought refuge in a nearby homestead, with the examination papers tightly tucked in his chest.

A team of top security officials, led by Siaya County Commissioner, Julius Otieno, his deputy, Robert Ng’etich and county police commander, Cleti Kimaiyo rushed to the scene and immediately launched investigations.

Otieno called for calm amongst the locals whom he also urged to help security officers with investigations that would lead to the arrest of the suspects.

The officials said that the Geography paper one examination later went on after some delays occasioned by the incident.

The injured officer was rushed to Siaya County referral hospital for treatment while the body of his colleague was taken to the facility’s mortuary.
