In a thrilling encounter at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, Gor Mahia secured their second consecutive win in the Kenyan Premier League, defeating Kajiado-based Mara Sugar 2-0. This victory saw the 21-time champions move up to fifth place in the standings, as they continue their push for a higher position in the league.

Interim Coach Zedekiah Otieno, who took over the helm following the departure of Brazilian coach Leo Neiva, is quickly making his mark on the team. This win, coupled with his 2-0 triumph against Kakamega Homeboyz in his previous match, signals a promising start to his tenure.

Gor Mahia's resilience and sharpness in the final moments of the match were on full display, as they secured all three points in front of an excited crowd that included team patron, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga.

The match was tightly contested, with both teams creating opportunities throughout the game. However, it was Austin Odhiambo’s 87th-minute strike that broke the deadlock. The young forward pressed relentlessly against Mara Sugar's defense, eventually finding space to fire a powerful shot into the back of the net. His goal came at a crucial time, just when it seemed the match might end in a stalemate.

As the game entered stoppage time, Gor Mahia sealed the victory with a second goal from Bendeke, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to double their lead and ensure all three points for the Green Army.

Despite the defeat, Mara Sugar can hold their heads high as they remain in a strong position in the league. With 16 points from 11 matches, they currently sit in third place, just three points behind second-place Bandari . The team’s solid performance throughout the season thus far has given them confidence, and they will look to bounce back in their next outing.

For Gor Mahia, this victory is more than just a step toward the top of the table; it is a demonstration of the grit and determination that has long been the hallmark of the club. With Otieno at the helm, the team is beginning to show the form that could see them challenge for yet another league title.

As the league progresses, both Gor Mahia and Mara Sugar will be aiming to strengthen their positions. Gor Mahia, now 8 points behind the league leaders KCB, will continue to chase the top spots with their momentum, while Mara Sugar will focus on maintaining their strong form as they compete with the league's elite.
