Government launches 100 Electric vehicles
By Robert Mutasi
Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Aden Duale launched MojaEv's maiden fleet of 100 fully electric vehicles at their Nairobi headquarters.
It is a very important launch since it marks a momentous time in Kenya's journey toward a green transport sector, showing the commitment of the country toward goals set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
At the flag-off, attended by dignitaries including the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Gladys Boss, and Industry PS Dr. Juma Mukhwana, Duale took the opportunity to reaffirm the urgency in the need for cleaner transportation solutions.
The current contribution of the transport sector to the country's greenhouse gas emission stands at about 10 percent, a figure likely to increase to 17 percent by the year 2030, hence the need for EVs as deemed crucial for reducing urban air pollution and climate change in the country.
The introduction of the MojaEv fleet represents an important stride in our sustainable development journey," Duale said. "Including electric vehicles into our transportation system is not only vital in reducing our carbon footprint, but also in bettering livelihoods as it provides an avenue for clean air quality for all Kenyans."
This initiative will also complement Kenya's Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy, the recently updated Nationally Determined Contributions, and the third National Climate Change Action Plan that were launched by President Dr. William Ruto during last year's inaugural Africa Climate Summit.
These strategic frameworks are tailored to transform Kenya into a low-emission and resilient economy.
Its fleet will comprise the latest state-of-the-art electric vehicles from Skyworth and NETA-which promise not just efficient mobile solutions but spur innovation and local green technology industries in their wake.
By this initiative, jobs are expected to be created, and investments promoted in the evolving electric vehicle sector.
As many countries grapple with ways of navigating a sustainable development path amidst climate change, the position that Kenya takes in terms of e-mobility inspires others in what they can be able to do.
Success here would now provide the impetus for further adoption of electric vehicles and accelerate the region toward clean energy.
In fact, with this launch, Kenya reassures the world on the front line of the African e-mobility landscape and reinforces its commitment to the fight against climate change.
