The Government has opened a regional Counterterrorism Training center at Kanyonyoo Border Police Unit in Kitui aiming to strengthen its capacity for the safety of Kenyans and the country as a whole.
The official Launch of the New centre on Tuesday was Presided over by Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo.
Dr. Omollo was in company of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Noor Gabow, Deputy DCI Director Nicholas Kamwende, Chris Landberg, Senior Bureau of Counter Terrorism, Kimberly Brown, Antiterrorism Assistance Program (ATA) program manager, BPU commandants, and representatives from the US Embassy in Nairobi .
The initiative comes as terrorism threats have escalated raising fears across the country forcing the government to adopt more security measures.
The Administration Police Service center is a fully functional training facility that offers a wide range of courses and advanced tactical operations.
So far, 264 Border Police Unit (BPU) officers have been trained as part of the program, with the numbers expected to increase.
As intended, the facility will also bring together other security agencies from the neighboring countries, to deliver relevant fundamentals of joint border operation consultation.
Supported by the United States Government, the initiative is the largest within Kenya and Africa underscoring the great premium attached to our country as the beacon of peace in the Region, and a global champion in countering terrorism and violent extremism.
