Government to upgrade Kericho Green Stadium Ahead of Mashujaa Celebrations

The government will upgrade the Kericho Green Stadium in readiness for this year’s National Mashujaa day celebrations to be presided over by President William Ruto.

Speaking to the Press after an assessment of the stadium, the Steering Committee on National Celebrations led by the State Department for Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr Ramond Omollo said that the stadium was the ideal location for the celebrations but there were challenges that needed to be addressed in terms of sprucing it up.

The PS said various sections of the stadium would be fixed as per the national standards of a hosting venue for national celebrations which would give the stadium a more attractive look making it more convenient for many guests expected on that material day.

“Starting with the entrances, then the main VIP pavilion which we need to fix, and other attendant stuff that needs to be taken care of, the stadium will receive a state of art facelift,” said Dr Omollo.

Meanwhile, the State Department for Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum who also toured the site revealed that the main entrance of the stadium would also be renovated and the traders next to the entrance would be relocated for the space to be user-friendly.

“The reason we are working closely with the county government is for them to be able to assist in the relocation of the traders and everyone else who might be inside the perimeter of the venue,” added Eng Tum

He confirmed that the contractors will start work in one and a half weeks and they will be briefed accordingly, in order to understand the parameters within which they have to operate.

Others present during the assessment of the stadium included the Sports Kenya Director General Mr Pius Metto among others.

The Green Stadium was constructed during Kericho’s first governor Prof Paul Chepkwony’s regime and was opened for use on June 20, 2019, where sporting tournaments, training of sportsmen and women among other social and political events are held.
