By Peter Ochieng Kisumu governor Anyang' Nyong'o on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, presided over the official opening of the multi-million ultra-modern Uhuru Business Park Market Complex. The governor used that opportunity to appeal to residents' support, as he seeks a second term ahead of the August 9, 2022, general elections. "I want to thank you for supporting my government for the past five years and wish to remind you that I will be defending my seat in the August Elections. For this, I am humbly pleading for your votes. We have done a lot but there is still work to be done!" pleaded governor Nyong'o. Construction of the over Ksh500 million Uhuru Business Park project started in 2019, with a view of relocating traders who were displaced by the expansion of the Kisumu Port. The Park can accommodate up to 10, 000 traders. "Uhuru Business Park is no ordinary project because it will from today, be a lifeline for thousands of small-scale business people and their dependents who have been praying for its completion," said the governor. President Uhuru Kenyatta was at the centre of the project, "approving resources to support" it. The Market Complex sits on Kenya Railways Corporation land, on a negotiated agreement with the County Government of Kisumu, and will now accommodate traders whose structures were removed to pave way for the upgrading of the Kisumu port and Railway line from Lwang’ni, Winmart, Varsity Plaza, Akamba line, Fontana, Konyando, KPLC, Bank Street and Lake Market. It will also serve as a home to small and informal traders displaced for infrastructural development within the city from the Central Business District (CBD) triangle, main bus park, Vunduba, Patels, Aga khan, along Kenyatta Avenue, Noo Oroo road, Kilimani shopping area, Central Primary, Kimute near Mamba, Nairobi Road, Oile park and Ondiek highway.
