Baringo county governor Benjamin Cheboi has urged residents to plant trees in their farms to reverse the adverse effects of climate change and boost food production.

Cheboi who was accompanied by his deputy Felix Maiyo was speaking at Kabimoi primary school, Eldama Ravine Sub-County on Wednesday where he presided over the planting of over 2,000 tree seedlings in the location, said the exercise was vital as trees were a source of livelihood as one can get income, use for medicinal value hence the need to plant them.

“As a resident of this area, I want to urge all residents to plant trees to uplift living standards of residents through tree planting as one can sell trees for income. In addition, fruit trees like macadamia, avocado, mango and bananas will enable one to boost nutritional value and earn income,” Cheboi said.

He added that the county government has identified coffee markets in Korea and said they were giving out coffee seedlings and urged head teachers to set aside land for planting coffee so that they can be sustainable and subsidize operational costs.

Baringo County assembly speaker Vincent Kemboi who accompanied the governor lauded local member of county assembly (MCA) Kennedy Kiprono who initiated the exercise and urged the residents to plant more trees noting that the trees would be beneficial for the environment and the future generations.

“I want to quote the late Prof. Wangari Maathai that “Nature is generous but also unforgiving,” therefore we should strive to protect the environment so that the adverse effects of climate change can be reversed. I also want to thank Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) for the good work they are doing in providing tree seedlings,” he added.

Kiprono in his address thanked the governor for his support in uplifting the living standards of the residents of his ward through the tree planting initiative and urged him to support the school in building a latrine for young children.
