His passing is tragic, Ruto mourns Justice Majanja

By Peter Ochieng

President William Ruto has expressed his sadness, following the demise of High Court Judge, David Majanja.

Justice Majanja died on Wednesday, while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

The President in his condolence message shared on social media said the judge was one of the most experienced in the country, making his death more tragic.

Justice Majanja doubled up as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

"The Hon. Majanja was a brilliant lawyer who joined the bench after an exemplary spell at the Bar. His integrity and ability inspired the confidence of his colleagues, while his powerful intellect made him a trusted juridical voice," Ruto stated.

"It has been evident for long that although fairly experienced, Hon. Majanja was at the beginning of a long and illustrious career, and this fact makes his passing all the more tragic."

On her part, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo said the late judge leaves a remarkable legacy of upholding the rule of law.

"His studious contributions to our country's Jurisprudence and commitment to uphold standards of excellence in Judicial service formed a remarkable legacy for which he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed."

While announcing Majanja's death, Chief Justice Martha Koome said he will be remembered as a towering figure in the development of the transformative post-2010 jurisprudence, and a crucial pillar in the institution-building of the JSC and the Judiciary.

"We stand in solidarity with the family, friends, and the entire Judiciary and JSC community during this very difficult period of mourning," she said.

"The Judiciary and JSC family calls for sensitivity and compassion as we come to terms with this sudden loss and share in grief with one another and with the people of Kenya."

His death comes a month after the demise of Milimani Law Courts Magistrate, Monica Kubuti, who was shot by a police officer during an active court session.
