Public and private institutions in Meru County have been urged to actively participate in tree planting  in supporting the government commitment to achieve the desired forest cover at the county level.

Presiding over a tree planting exercise in Kangeta Prison, Igembe Central Deputy County Commissioner, Fred Ndunga commended the institution for planting over 10,000 indigenous and exotic trees on their land since the onset of the ongoing rains.

Ndunga said achieving the desired national forest cover remained a collective responsibility, where all national government administrators had an obligation to mobilize the public into taking advantage of the prevailing rains to plant trees in public institutions among other identified public utility parcels of land in their areas of jurisdiction.

The administrator attributed a recent drought situation experienced in most parts of the county to uncontrolled and irresponsible cutting down of trees in forested areas and at household level, saying planting more trees was the only guaranteed means of attracting more rains throughout the year.

He said Meru County had a lot of potential in food production for domestic and commercial purposes and should not be listed among regions in need of relief food supplies in the future.

He reiterated that if Meru people, regardless of their age, political and social status committed to planting more trees throughout the year and refrain from destroying existing trees in forest and household areas, there would be more rainfall received in the region, hence food sufficiency all the time.
