Barcelona president Joan Laporta has praised Robert Lewandowski for his commitment to the club, revealing that the Polish striker recently offered to revise his contract to help the club deal with its financial problems.
As Barcelona continue to balance their books and comply with La Liga's strict Financial Fair Play rules, Lewandowski has offered to take a cut of his current salary in order to extend his contract until 2027.
Commenting on the situation, Laporta expressed his admiration for Lewandowski's dedication and commitment to the club's goals.
"I see Robert more motivated than ever," Laporta said. "Robert needed this new impetus, he is in very good physical condition, and I can see him very happy. He is a dedicated player for the club, and I can assure you of that."
Lewandowski's proposal to reduce his salary was seen as a sign of solidarity with the club when Barcelona is facing serious financial challenges.
The club's efforts to meet La Liga's financial demands have been well-documented, with player signing and salary cap issues often dominating the headlines.
Lewandowski's desire to renew his contract highlights the desire of the veteran striker to contribute more than just his performance on the field.
"When he heard that we had to make efforts to reach Fair Play to sign players, he told us that he could reduce his contract to help the club," Laporta revealed.
This proposal is in line with Lewandowski's commitment to ensure that Barcelona can continue to strengthen the squad, despite financial constraints.
However, Laporta was quick to assure the star striker that the move would not be necessary.
"I'm very grateful, but I told him it wasn't important," Laporta added. "He is very dedicated to the club, and he also demands it from the team, himself, and his teammates."
Lewandowski, who joined Barcelona in the summer of 2022 from Bayern Munich, has been one of the key figures in Barcelona squad.
His goalscoring ability and leadership have been invaluable as the team strives to regain its place at the top of European football.
Laporta also expressed confidence that this season could be one of Lewandowski's best yet.
"We got a good performance from him, and I'm sure this will be Lewandowski's best year yet," the president concluded.
As Barcelona look to navigate another challenging season on and off the pitch, the commitment of players like Lewandowski provides a much-needed boost.
His desire to renew his contract emphasizes his deep relationship with the club and his faith in the project being built under the leadership of Laporta and Hansi Flick.
