The Jubilee Party has fired back at Deputy President William Ruto over his scathing attack on the government regarding the high cost of living and fuel shortage reported across the country. In a press conference at his Karen Residence, DP Ruto claimed that the current high cost of living and  fuel crisis in the country has been orchestrated by cartels and “incompetent public officials”. “The casual and insensitive attitude to the plight of tens of millions of struggling Kenyans is a disturbing development that has emboldened cartels which have taken over critical economic sectors and are now moving in top gear to capture the state. "This is why, in the midst of this distressing crisis, the loudest messages from public officials including ministers are centered around, BBI Reggae and Azimio jingle bells and whistles,” the statement read in part. According to the DP, Auditor General Nancy Gathungu had flagged the illegal diversion of public funds to the tune of billions to private entities and other state agencies, hence causing the artificial fuel shortage. The deputy president further pointed out that Gathungu had flagged the irregular petroleum importation practices by a number of oil marketers. "The Auditor-General has already raised questions on the irregular and illegal diversion of these consumer protection funds to State agencies and unnamed private entities. "She has also decried abuse on the petroleum import system in favour of some preferred and politically connected oil marketers, deliberately depriving Kenyans of the subsidy mechanism," the DP lamented. Responding to the DP, Jubilee party in a statement signed by Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni accused the DP of being hypocritical, adding that being the second in command, he should provide solutions instead of complaining The party argued that Ruto cannot lecture the government on high cost of living yet the privileges he enjoys including;  high-end cars and his official residence in Karen are catered for by taxpayers money. Jubilee claimed the DP uses approximately Ksh50 million every weekend on his campaigns, adding that this huge amount is catered for by the taxpayer as a result of the office he holds. The party challenged Ruto to either perform his duties as deputy president or resign and join the opposition. “Mr Ruto is taking advantage of the plight of Kenyans to earn political mileage while posing as a Mesiah. Mr Ruto should make a choice, be an ordinary citizen holding no office or be the second in command paid by taxpayers to address challenges facing the country. “It is not lost to Kenyans that the Deputy President uses not less than Kshs50 million in transport and logistics for his campaign and security which is already an extra burden carried by the taxpayer,” Jubilee’s statement read in part.
