Junior Secondary Teachers in Kiambu trained

Teachers from Kiambu County who will be teaching the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) have been trained, Director of Education Kiambu County Simon Wanjohi has confirmed.

Wanjohi said the County is well prepared for the transition and that over the just concluded December holidays, teachers of junior secondary within the county were trained on mathematics and integrated science.

“In April last year, the teachers were also trained in social sciences through government programs through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)”, he noted.

Wanjohi told KNA that so far the Junior Secondary is a success and looks promising despite a few challenges but generally the programme is working.

  He however noted that the biggest challenge had been shortage of teachers, which has now been addressed by the president’s intervention in recruitment of teachers to better the situation.

Schools were registered for junior secondary last year. Grade 6 of last year will join Junior Secondary after Kenya Primary School Education Assessment, (KPSEA). 

 In addition, Wanjohi said that the ministry of education has implemented programmes for co curriculum activities and urged all students to be given an opportunity to part in their areas of choice.

 At the same time, he added that teachers have also been trained on how to assess gender-based violence issues, working with parents and collaborating with organizations that deal with GBV such as interior and children department

On Adult education, the Director said there is a fully fledged department within the Ministry on the same and Kiambu County currently has 15 Sub County centres that provide adult education.

    “Kiambu County has standard officers in charge of 15 sub-counties. Their work is to guide and teach, observe and guide and they also assist and interpret the curriculum design”, he said.

Wanjohi further said that capitation has been released by the government and all schools in Kiambu have since received funding.

Students reported back to school on 8th January, while form ones are expected to report on 15th January 2024.
