KAA celebrates Renegade Air's Homabay inaugural flight

By Peter Ochieng

Increased activities are expected at the Kabunde airstrip in Homabay County going foward, following Renegade air's inaugural flight on Monday.

Henceforth, the airline will be flying the Nairobi - Homabay route thrice per week; that is Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is among key stakeholders pleased with the move, which is expected to open up Homabay County and neighbouring areas for investment and business opportunities.

"This new route from Nairobi to Homabay marks a significant milestone in enhancing air connectivity and promoting regional development," said KAA in a statement.

Alex Gitari, KAA Managing Director highlighted the authority's commitment to expanding the runway at Kabunde Airstrip to accommodate increased air traffic.

"The land acquisition process is currently 60% complete as KAA diligently works to secure the necessary land. We are also in the final stages of scoping and design for the expansion and upgrading of the terminal building at Kabunde airstrip," he said.

"These enhancements aim to improve overall functionality and enhance the passenger experience, ensuring a seamless and efficient travel process."

He further highlighted the successful completion of rehabilitation projects at the western circuit airstrips, in collaboration with the State Department of Transport.

The rehabilitation efforts, undertaken at Kakamega, Kitale and Migori airstrips, aim to decongest Kisumu International Airport (KIA), and increase regional air traffic.

The airstrips are now fully operational, promoting improved interconnectivity among domestic airports and providing more affordable travel options within the region.
