Kakamega County Government has unveiled a shelter Improvement program to construct semi-permanent houses for vulnerable families including widows to offer them a conducive place to live.
The County government has constructed 360 houses, six in every ward across the 60 wards of Kakamega.
The Beneficiaries of the program also received two blankets, one mattress, and a boost of Sh. 2000 each to start off their life.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender & Culture Mophat Mandela said they also constructed water tanks at the home of beneficiaries to enable them to have a water supply.
Governor Fernandes Barasa said the shelter improvement will be an annual program where the county government will identify vulnerable families to be considered.
He said in five years’ time, they will increase the number of beneficiaries of the program to 10 per ward in order to ensure as many people as possible stay in decent houses.
The governor directed that the beneficiaries be included in the Kazi Mashinani program that is set to commence next month so that they can earn a living and support their families.
