Kenya Red Cross Society boss resigns

By Peter Ochieng

Dr. Asha Mohammed is no longer the Secretary General (SG), Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS).

Dr. Mohammed resigned on Friday, April 15th 2023, over what was termed as personal reasons.

KRCS in a statement signed by board chairman Geoffrey Korir said the Society's Deputy Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Idris takes over from Mohammed's position with immediate effect, albeit in an acting capacity.

He said the outgoing SG is in the coming months expected to ensure a smooth transition, at the humanitarian organisation.

"The board is confident that Dr. Asha will be able to oversee an effective transition process with the support of the board, staff, volunteers and partners of the Kenya Red Cross,” said the Chairman.

“Dr. Asha has been the Secretary General since January 2020 and prior to that held the positions of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services at the Kenya Red Cross.”

Dr. Asha served as KRCS boss at the most difficult moment in history, during the period of Covid-19 pandemic.

Korir commended her for putting her best foot forward, during the global pandemic.

"Her role as Secretary General coincided with a very difficult global and local humanitarian context, from responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, to the worst drought the country has experienced in the last several decades.”

“Dr. Asha has been an inspiration to the community of staff, volunteers, partners and members of the Kenya Red Cross Society, who look forward to her support in the future as a community leader and life member of the Kenya Red Cross,” added Mr. Korir.

Dr. Asha Mohammed succeeded Abbas Gullet at KRCS.
