Some 390 persons with disability in Kachibora and Saboti Sub-County in Trans Nzoia County will benefit from assistive and mobility devices sponsored by the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation (Kenya RE) through the “Niko fiti” campaign.

The distribution which is subdivided into three phases will benefit 1000 PWDs in different parts of the country and has already improved the lives of over 11800 PWDs since its inception in 2011.

The exercise is in line with Kenya’s vision to enhance inclusivity and diversity by enabling more people to participate in activities that improve their livelihoods.

Speaking at the event, Kenya RE’s Group Managing Director (MD), Dr. Hillary Wachiga said that the Company has a vision to secure the future for its stakeholders and the Niko Fiti initiative is one of the ways to do this.

“We want to empower PWDs to integrate into society and to actively contribute to social and economic activities for the greater good,” stated Wachiga.

Further, the MD added that it’s for workplaces to entrench inclusion policies for PWDs, and for buildings to be retrofitted with structures that allow easy access by PWDs as Kenya RE is a leading example in its commercial buildings and offices.

The Association for Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) Chief Executive Officer Anthony Nzuki lauded the partnership with Kenya RE stating that it has over the years not only made a positive impact towards PWDs in society but also change lives by enabling them to move around unassisted, where they are able to go to school, start businesses and do activities that truly make them independent.

“We use our community networks and leaders to identify needy beneficiaries which makes this initiative a collaborative effort,” added Nzuki.

In addition, the initiative has been involved in other activities to impact environment and so far the pillar has supported tree planting in the uplands forest stations where it has planted 50,000 trees.
