The Government has put in place plans to increase funding for construction and renovation of police stations and staff quarters countrywide.
Even as the government continues to implement the programme, Nyumba Kumi Initiative in Kikuyu Constituency is calling upon stakeholders and the Member of Parliament (MP), to fast-track and look into the deplorable state of the Kikuyu Police Station.
Peter Kibiru Muturi, Nyumba Kumi Chairman at the Kikuyu Sub-county Community Policing asked the MP, Kimani Ichungwa, to not only address the dilapidated police station, but also improve the working conditions of the police.
“We are asking Kikuyu MP, Kimani Ichungwa, to use resources from the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), to facelift the police station. This police station has been serving the community around and doing a good job, yet it has been forgotten and it is not right for the police to work under this poor environment,” Kibiru said.
The Chairman who was speaking during a Nyumba Kumi meeting to support and applaud the police officers in the area for a job well done and good collaboration on security matters in the area, explained that the structure in place at the police station, was built during the colonial era and thus needs facelift.
“To improve the working conditions of the police, give them equipment, give them offices, give them proper housing, so that they also appreciate that they are part and parcel of the community,” Samuel Kigathi a resident of kikuyu said.
Kamau Boro, MCA Kikuyu said that there are plans for a new housing unit for the police, once done the police will feel that they are appreciated and be willing to work with the community better.
“Some years back the NG-CDF funds were being used to put up police units at Sub-county levels in this area , but this year in 2024, we have agreed that we give a new Phase to this police station”, Boro said .
Meanwhile, Kikuyu Sub-county Police Commander, Ronald Kirui, praised the residents of Kikuyu for collaborating with the police on matters of security through the Nyumba Kumi initiative.
The Community policing initiative is a programme that emphasizes partnership between the police service and community members.
It also recognizes the independence and shared responsibility of the Police and the Community in ensuring a safe and secure environment for all citizens.
