Leaders in Kisii County have lauded the national government for selecting the county to benefit from the first phase of the County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) that will be set up in Bomachoge Borabu Constituency.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in the constituency, the area Member of Parliament (MP) Obadiah Barongo said the selection of the area for the construction of the park was greatly influenced by the fact that his constituents are actively engaging in agricultural production.
“We are grateful for the recognition that our constituency’s productivity is very high and this project will contribute significantly to improved food security and increased market opportunities for our people,” Obadiah noted.
The legislator urged the county government to construct shades for small-scale traders such as boda boda operators and vegetable vendors within the industrial park to enable them to conduct business in the region.
Nominated Senator, Esther Okenyuri said the initiative is a dream project for the Kenya Kwanza administration and will promote the involvement of local women and young people in productive activities.
Ms. Okenyuri called for unity among the local leaders so that they can promote inter-county trade which will incorporate marketing their agricultural products in other counties.
She expressed her willingness to work together with the county officials in Kisii in order to promote the national development agenda in the region.
Similarly, Bokimonge Ward MCA Amos Onderi requested the contractor of the project to prioritize the locals for job opportunities that will arise during the construction of the industrial park.
Onderi who is a member of the Kisii County Assembly Trade Committee noted that despite the land being gazetted as community land, there are people who have lived here for long and the only way to compensate them is to consider the families that have been affected.
In addition, he said that the community members are looking forward to utilizing improved infrastructure such as enhanced water supply and roads as a result of the initiative.
“Our constituency has only 47 kilometers of tarmacked road that was done many years ago. I am requesting that this project supports the additional construction of tarmacked roads in this area,” Onderi noted.
The Kenya Kwanza administration has begun the construction of County Industrial and Aggregation Parks (CAIP) in the counties with the aim of boosting agriculture and creating additional jobs in the country.
The project is a partnership between the State Department for Industry and the Council of Governors and will see each county contributing Sh. 250 million and another Sh. 250 million will be provided by the national government for the initiative.
