Kisumu County Government installs Rice mill at Ahero Irrigation Scheme

The County Government of Kisumu has officially installed a state-of-the-art rice mill at the Ahero Irrigation Scheme on Saturday.

Kisumu County Governor Peter Anyang Nyong’o termed the project as a "Significant" move towards boosting productivity and cutting off costs. 

"This move is a significant stride toward enhancing rice productivity and slashing milling costs for our hardworking farmers. Together, we're cultivating a brighter, more prosperous future for Kisumu!" Governor Nyong’o said on a statement on X. 

Earlier on June this year, the County Government of Kisumu had announced that the installation of the Ksh 20 million facility was 95 perfect complete and would soon be operational after pending issues were sorted including its operisation. 

The mill comes with unique components with includes a colour sorter with a high efficiency compared to the old one which had a very long recovery. 

The modern plant also targets to boost rice production and provide a market for farmers. The new plant will process 2.5 tonnes of rice an hour.

Under operation, the mill will enable farmers to have markets for their produce and cushion them from exploitation from middlemen in order to get value for their money.

Currently, the county has more than 15,000 acres under rice production.

Besides providing a ready market, the mill will create employment to many residents, both directly and indirectly.
