Kisumu set for food festival to showcase cultural heritage

The Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu will on Saturday play host to the first edition of a food festival, dubbed ‘FoodFest’ aimed at celebrating the Lake region’s rich cultural heritage.

Addressing the press on Wednesday ahead of the event, Ian Wayne Kamau, FoodFest Chief Operating Officer said traditional culinary will provide sights to behold and savour for those who will attend.

“FoodFest is more than just an event; it is a vibrant showcase of Kisumu’s diverse culinary heritage and its growing role as a destination for food enthusiasts,” said Kamau.

“From 9 AM until late, we invite you to explore a delightful array of local and international dishes, enjoy engaging cooking demonstrations, and participate in cultural performances that highlight our unique traditions,” he emphasised.

“As we embark on this culinary journey together, I encourage you to savour the experiences, embrace the diversity, and share in the joy of this celebration.”

He was flanked by Farida Salim, Kisumu County Chief Executive Committee Member (CECM), in charge of Trade, Co-operatives, Industry and Marketing among others during the press briefing.

“We are excited to be associated with this festival being the first one in Kisumu and organised by young people,” she noted.

“As a department, we strongly advocate for the empowerment of young entrepreneurs, and we welcome any venture by the young people. And it does not matter whether they are in Kisumu or out of Kisumu,” added the CECM.

To make the event a success, FoodFest is partnering with various players, among them Lovely Gardens Guest Home (LGGH), Coca-Cola, Stabex Gas, Glovo, Marie Stopes, Jibu Water and Safaricom.

Activities of the day will include cooking competitions, food tasting and sampling, live music and entertainment, art and craft, and fun and games.

Tickets are ranging from Sh300 for Gen-Z or foodie and Sh2,000 for VVIP. One can dial *672*66# to buy a ticket.
