The Narok Branch of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has elected a new Chairman and other two officials in a by-election that was held at Ole Ntimama Stadium, Narok County.
Newton Koech, was elected as the new Chairman and was challenged by Wilson Tololo, who was previously the Vice Chairman. The by-election involved teachers from larger Narok County.
Koech managed to win by 801 votes, Tololo got 460 votes in the second place where over 1,000 teachers participated in the election.
The election saw two more officials voted in; David Mantirra elected Vice Chair, and Samuel Sang elected as Branch Executive Committee official to represent Mulot region, that includes Sogoo, Sagamian and Ilmotiok in Narok.
The Branch Chairmanship position has been vacant following the resignation of Robert Simotwo, who joined the County government of Narok as the County Executive Committee for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Gender, Culture and Social Services last year.
In his acceptance speech, Koech said the win is for all teachers and assured the members to support and champion for their welfare and review of their salaries.
“I appreciate all the teachers from the Narok County for electing me and I promise to fight for their rights,” said Koech
Koech promised that the Union will address the problems and challenges that teachers faced in the County.
Koech noted that Narok County was gazetted as one of the ASAL Counties and teachers should be enjoying the hardship allowance of which they have been denied.
The newly elected Chairman also promised to fight for early pregnancy in the county, as it is still a challenge, asking teachers and other stakeholders to come together to address the problem and advocate for solutions.
Koech urged teachers who are newly employed to join KNUT so that the Union can jointly address their grievances.
The Narok Branch, KNUT Secretary General, Simiren Soiyiantet, said the Union is making efforts to address challenges that teachers are facing in their line of duty, by ensuring that teachers are guaranteed good working environment.
