The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto has flagged off the distribution of assorted food items to vulnerable Muslim families in Mombasa, Kwale and Lamu counties as they mark the holy month of Ramadhan.

Capt. Ruto said Ramadhan is a month of fasting, praying and spiritual nourishment, adding the holy month also enhanced oneness through compassion and caring for the needy in the community.

“KPA embraces care as a fundamental value in our operations, business relations and communal relations.  As a result, we believe in partnerships and extending a helping hand whenever our community needs our assistance. That is why we are donating these foodstuff items worth three million for iftar to be distributed to our Muslim families in Kwale, Lamu, and Mombasa in celebrating this period,” he said.

The food donation, he added was also a response to the President’s ongoing call for corporate organizations to assist the needy in the community, particularly during this epoch when the country is experiencing severe drought as a result of failed rains in the last three years.

Capt. Ruto noted that KPA as a caring organization has over the years continued to improve communities in the areas of education, health, environmental conservation, sports and talent development.

He said, “KPA has through the corporate social investment programme implemented the construction of infrastructures like schools, dispensaries, and libraries and supported sports through sponsorship of clubs like our very own Bandari Football Club.”

The authority, he further said, has adopted the Tudor Creek mangrove forest to rehabilitate and grow mangroves to protect the sea ecosystem   in a bid to combat the adverse effects of climate change

“To reduce carbon emissions and limit reliance on fossil fuels, KPA is steadily transitioning to clean energy through the adoption of solar for energy needs at port facilities,” he highlighted, noting corporate social corporate investment programmes was one of the tools KPA was using to contribute to the creation of social values.

National Vice Chairman of Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Sheikh Muhdhar Khitamy and other officials received the donation on behalf of the targeted beneficiaries.

Sheikh Khitamy thanked KPA for the food donation saying it will alleviate the sufferings of the less fortunate families among communities.
