Kenya Power had in the morning announced that its system used to generate tokens for the pre-paid customers is experiencing a hitch.
In a statement on their social media pages, the company said it was working to restore normalcy within the shortest time possible.
“We are experiencing a hitch on the prepaid system which is affecting the generation of electricity tokens,” Kenya Power said in a statement.
“We are working to restore normalcy within the shortest time possible. We apologize for the inconvenience caused,” It added.
The statement comes after Kenyans expressed frustrations for not being able to buy tokens.
Data from Kenya Power indicate that as of March 2017, 3.5 million customers were on prepaid meters.
Prepaid is a service that allows customers to purchase electricity tokens which they then use.
This is unlike the postpaid service where customers are billed depending on their consumption.
Kenya Power has been shifting to prepaid in a bid to embrace advanced technology that makes it easy for customers to purchase electricity.
Under this advanced technology, a customer purchases electricity tokens and credit units to his meter by typing a given code on the meter's customer interface unit screen.
