The Embu Chapter of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for the speedy resolution of the issues that saw lawyers who take up pro bono cases down their tools in order to return the dispensation of justice to normal.
The Embu Chapter Chair Rose Migwi confirmed that lawyers have for some time not been taking up the cases meant to represent those who cannot afford legal representation because the Judiciary has not paid their allowance claims worth billions. Some of the claims date as far back as 2019.
Migwi said LSK had also proposed some reviews to the rules guiding pro bono services, among them the amount a lawyer should be paid for representing each client.
Previously, she said, the Judiciary has been paying Sh 30000 per client represented but the Society wants this figure reviewed to Sh 50,000. The Judiciary is yet to agree to these terms.
The poor, minors and refugees are entitled to be represented by the court appointed lawyers.
