University receives public participation report

Imenti south deputy county commissioner, Mary Mwangi has urged the public to guard against any form of influence likely to negatively impact education and other community development initiatives.
Speaking during the official handing over of public participation reports on the proposed Tharaka University campus in Mitunguu ward in her boardroom, Mwangi commended all players for remaining proactive and committed to the noble process of having the campus established as soon as possible.
Mwangi said people neighbouring the proposed site had so far played a crucial role in laying ground for the campus, ahead of the formal engagement between the government and the larger community of Gitaara village, Rwompo sub-location in Kirendene location.
The administrator commended area assistant chief, Joel Ithima for working round the clock as he co-ordinated the steering committee in planning and convening successful public participation sessions at the proposed site all the way from the village to the sub-county level.
She confirmed that the idea of having Tharaka University start a campus on public land in the area has been accorded a lot of support by residents and their neighbours, saying she personally presided over the sub-county public participation session at the site last month.
The deputy county commissioner assured the public that the government was committed to having all public land in the sub-county identified and put into proper use towards improving community livelihoods within the sub-county and the larger Meru County.
Upon handing over the reports to the University Vice Chancellor, Faustin Muchui, the DCC urged national government administrative officers in the Mitunguu division, led by area assistant commissioner, James Mwaniki to diligently embark on clearing the area of all sorts of illicit alcohol and other substances likely to interfere with the smooth running of education programs at the campus.
Mwangi was categorical that chiefs, their assistants and their immediate supervisor were to be held responsible for anybody found engaging in the illicit brew trade and perpetrating drug and substance abuse, adding that her office was ready to deal with any form of laxity or collusion working against public welfare and development.
Upon receiving the required documents from the DCC on behalf of Tharaka University, the director admissions, Faustin Muchui advised the steering committee to immediately follow up on the matter with a letter requesting the university to start the campus at the agreed 50-acre site sooner than later.
Muchui appealed to the steering committee to continue with the same zeal in sensitising parents and potential students within the catchment area on the benefits of taking advantage of a campus in their locality.
‘’The new learning facility will definitely bring with it a lot of opportunities and privileges geared towards giving the area a socio-economic face lift going forward,’’ Muchui said.
