Machakos County had been put on high alert of a possible cholera outbreak after several cases were reported in other parts of the country due to the ongoing Elnino rains.

Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi speaking to the press in his office Wednesday asked residents to observe high levels of hygiene to prevent any outbreak the disease.

He further disclosed that a multi sectoral team has been set up to assess and monitor cholera outbreak across the county.

"The team will help combat the spread of the disease in case of an outbreak. As a county we are ready and committed to tackle any cholera related challenges,” said Mwangangi.

The deputy governor also ordered repairs to be done to all leaking raw sewages in Machakos town within 24 hours to prevent cholera.

Speaking at the same briefing, the County Secretary Dr. Muya Ndambuki said all levels four hospitals across the county have been activated to deal with any cholera outbreak.

Dr. Muya said at least five beds have put on standby in each level four facility to treat cholera patients in case of an outbreak.

Also present was County Executive Committee Member (ECM) for Health Dr. Daniel Yumbya who urged residents operating food businesses to maintain high levels of hygiene in their establishments.

He also urged residents to wash their hands thoroughly and ensure they have safe drinking water to curb cholera.

"No cases have been reported so far but we are on high alert to tackle any outbreak,” he said.

At least six people died, while 45 others were treated and discharged following a cholera outbreak in Machakos on March 6.
