In an empowering initiative, women across Mandera have joined forces in a resolute campaign to end violence against women and girls.
Operating under the theme "UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls," Mandera County is dedicating this year's 16 Days of Activism to address and combat gender-based violence.
The County has transformed into a dynamic network for social mobilization during this period, showcasing advocacy, news, and actions aimed at ending violence against women and girls.
Sumeya Bishar, the CECM for Gender and Social Services, leads the charge, pledging to relentlessly pursue justice for affected girls and women in Mandera County.
Bishar emphasizes that violence against women and girls is not only baseless, but also a significant impediment to the region's development.
She urges women to approach household issues with respect, fostering understanding in their communities.
Other women leaders echo the sentiment, advocating for robust responses and increased investment in prevention as the key solution to combat this pervasive issue.
Despite progress, gender-based violence and defilement cases persist in the region, affecting over 2000 women and girls in the past three years.
This grim reality highlights the urgent need for collective efforts to eradicate violence against women, a hindrance to equality, development, peace, and the fulfillment of women and girls' human rights.
The campaign, launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, will span 16 days, culminating on December 10, 2023, the International Human Rights Day.
